A Letter To My Daughter On Her First Birthday

A Letter To My Daughter

I can’t believe the time has passed so quickly. Here I sit, staring at you, on your first birthday. Sweet baby, you are the most beautiful girl I have ever laid my eyes on. You are so wild and free. I love the way that you dance to the beat of your own drum.

I would give anything to see the world through your eyes. So full of adventure and wonder. Every single moment is full of excitement. You are constantly surprising me with how fast you learn. You have a tough shell. No one gets in your way and nothing hurts you.

Sweet girl, I hope you hold on to that. The world can be so mean. It’s going to break you down piece by piece. I’m not worried though. You will rebuild and become even stronger.

I wish I could tell you that life will be easy. I wish I could make life easy for you. That I could take away all failures and heartbreak. But, I can’t. Even if I could, I wouldn’t be doing you any favors. These tribulations will help you grow, help you learn, and motivate you to be the amazing woman, I know you are going to be.

Honey, I know you are going to change the world. I know you are going to be the good in the world. You have a beautiful energy that radiates from you. I hope you always spread the good.

Don’t be mean. It will get you nowhere and only cause regret. Don’t get sucked into negative people’s games. They will always try to bring you down but you are so much better than that.

Let’s talk about boys, sweetheart. Don’t talk to one until you are 30. Moving on.

Okay, I know you will talk to boys. You will have a first love and a first heartbreak. It will seem like no one understands. People will dismiss you for being young. That you need to move on quickly. That is not the truth, baby.

It will hurt, you will cry, and feel like you will never love again. It’s okay to feel like that. Take the time you need. Eventually, you will feel better. It’s inevitable, sweetheart.

Not only will a boy break your heart but so will a girl. Your best friend. The person you told all of your darkest secrets to. There may come a time where she turns her back on you. You may have a fight and never recover. It will feel like a knife through your beautiful heart. Girls are mean. Girls will always be mean.

At some point, you will probably be the mean girl, just like I was. Try your best to mend your friendships. If they can’t be mended then move on. Don’t hold hate in your heart, forgive even when it’s hardest, then move on.

My wish for you, baby, is that you live a life of no regrets.

I hope you travel. The world is so big, don’t stay put. Put your toes in the sand at the most beautiful beach and feel the warm sun on your face. Learn another language. Be spontaneous. Life doesn’t always need a plan. Chase after anything you want. You are so wild and I know you will.

You are different, honey. That is something I admire about you. Always be different. Never change to please anyone. Do what makes you happy. Put your good energy and tough shell out there and take on the world.

Always remember. Mommy loves you. I’ll always you. I will always be your biggest fan and your front row cheerleader. I will never turn my back on you, even when you make a mistake. No matter what happens in your life you can always come home to Mama.

I love you, sweetheart.

This is such a beautiful thing to do! My daughter just turned 21 (can’t believe it!) and I’m still writing her letters. Keep it up! I know she will treasure those letters later just as my daughter does.
