How To Improve Your Child’s Communication Skills

Positive living isn’t only for adults. As parents, we need to incorporate our children into our positive living journeys.
This is the first step in a four-step series, called, “Teaching our children to live a positive and happy life.”
By the end of the series, you will have learned several ways to work positive living in your child’s life. You will notice a huge difference in your child’s behavior including, gratitude, self-love, confidence, and communications skills.
When living a positive life it’s important to remember simple positive parenting tips.
These exercises will benefit you and your child.
The first step in this series and teaching your child about a positive life is communication. Most parents and children lack the ability to communicate. Instead, some are passive, use yelling often, and dismiss each other’s feelings.
It’s important to remember your child has feelings just like you. Their brains are still developing and often cannot communicate to you how they feel.
Every day for 30 minutes try sitting in a quiet room with no distractions. Put all electronics and toys away. Now it’s time to talk to your children but it’s more important to listen. During these 30 minutes, you can do the exercises listed below or read from the books below.
First work on simple communications regarding feelings. This will not only help communication but encourage growth in your child’s emotional intelligence.
Teach your child how to identify their feelings. you can do this by using a simple phrase, “I feel (insert emotion) because (___).
You can also use questions such as,”how did this make you feel?”
How did it make you feel when Timmy stole the book from you?
Help your child identify the correct emotion if they are unsure.
Then have your child repeat the phrase. I feel mad because Timmy stole my book. They have now identified the feeling associated with what happened. Now it’s time to teach your child to communicate those feelings.
How did your child react when the book was taken? Cry, yell, scream, or hit?
Explain to your little one that the proper reaction to being mad is to tell the other child how he feels instead of yelling or crying.
You are now teaching him/her to use his words and improve his emotional intelligence.
Encourage your child to approach the other child. Try using the phrase, Timmy, it made me mad when you stole my book. Please give it back to me.”
Your child’s communication skills will not improve immediately but working with them daily will help them catch on quickly. You will notice less screaming and more explaining how they feel.
Encourage communication between yourself and your child
This is not only for other kids this is to improve the communication between your child and yourself.
When your child is upset (even if it seems to be over something silly) it’s important to not react and to listen.
Calmly go down to your child level and encourage them to take a deep breath. Then calmly ask them to explain what they are feeling to you. It could be something that seems minor to you but could be a major crisis in your child’s eyes. Remember their brains are still developing. They do not yet have the ability to handle all situations.
Help your child identify the emotion and the reason why. Always listen to them. You want your children to always feel comfortable talking to you.
After your child tells you what is bothering them discuss with them how to solve the problem. Let them know their feelings are important to you and you want to help them. Building this trust with your child is crucial to their communication skills and your relationship.
Practicing these simple communication exercises every day will improve your child’s socioemotional skills and emotional intelligence. These skills will be used for the rest of their lives. Building friendships and relationships will come easily throughout their life.
When your child is able to communicate and identify their emotions they are able to live a more positive and enriching life.
